A just society is measured by how it cares for its most vulnerable members. The proposed $200 million in budget cuts to the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) threaten the dignity and well-being of thousands of Marylanders with disabilities who rely on essential services for daily living, employment and independence. These cuts would not only eliminate critical programs such as Low Intensity Support Services (LISS), but also reduce wage adjustments for caregivers and impose funding caps that restrict access to necessary support.

As Catholics, we affirm the inherent dignity of every human person, including those with disabilities, who deserve to be fully included in society and supported in their needs.

The Church has long stood against any form of discrimination or neglect toward individuals with disabilities, recognizing that each life is a sacred gift. Pope Francis reminds us‘Persons with disabilities are fully human subjects, with rights and duties.’ Ensuring adequate funding for disability services is not merely a fiscal issue — it is a moral obligation.

The Maryland Catholic Conference urges policymakers to reject these harmful cuts and instead prioritize policies that uphold human dignity, promote equity and provide meaningful opportunities for all Marylanders. We stand in solidarity with the disability community and call for a budget that reflects the fundamental principles of justice, compassion and respect for life.
